The Sustainable Rail Initiative (SRI) powered by EcoVadis is an industry initiative dedicated to driving ESG maturity throughout the Tier 1 rail industry and operating companies’ value chains. By utilizing harmonized supplier assessments from EcoVadis since 2015, the members are improving their supply chain ESG programs, reducing the workload for their procurement teams and scaling their programs to achieve a greater impact on the entire industry.
Until 2023 the SRI was primarily grouped around European EcoVadis rail industry clients in the Railsponsible.org not-for-profit organization. EcoVadis is now expanding the group internationally and welcoming rail operators on at least a regional level, ideally national or continental level, manufacturing rail OEMs and key Tier 1 suppliers to the OEMs to join as members. In an industry widely recognized as the greenest choice for logistics, transportation and travel, including tier 1 suppliers is an important step toward transparency of the ESG industry risks deeper in the value chain. Explore our dedicated webpage to meet the entire team.
EcoVadis and the SRI have a friendly connection to the Railsponsible.org not-for-profit organization and membership in the SRI is independent of a membership in any other sustainability industry vertical. Leveraging the strength of supplier data collected via the EcoVadis Solution, the activities of SRI do not overlap with other existing initiatives of the Railway industry but rather complement them.
The objective of working with EcoVadis as an industry peer group is to accelerate each member’s individual sustainable procurement program through a harmonized assessment standard and a strong joint message to the suppliers to contribute to improving the industry value chain’s ESG footprint. SRI members' efforts are also facilitated by the SRI shared network in which supplier assessments are shared by all participants of the initiative (more than 3,000 rail supplier scorecards in the SRI shared network). This network is compliant with antitrust safeguards as commercial and contractual information between a member of the SRI and an assessed company in the shared SRI pool is anonymized within the group.
Driven by a common ambition of a more sustainable Rail supply chain, SRI members leverage the insights derived from the shared network to guide its impact on its sector. Core topics of interest include supplier capacity building, alignment with the regulatory framework, best practices sharing and reporting on sustainable commitments. Supported by a dedicated EcoVadis Sector Initiative Program Manager, SRI members meet monthly to discuss their common concerns and ambitions.
